30 Countries Memoirs – Slovenia

Country: Slovenia

First Visit: September 2013

Number of Times Visited: 1

Cities Visited: Maribor

Slovenia was a convenient stop over on the train trip from Croatia to Hungary, and always happy to add another country to my list, we spent two nights there in the city of Maribor which is in the heart of Slovenia’s wine growing region.

Favorite Memory: We happened to be in Maribor during their annual fall wine festival which had numerous tastings and other events we could attend.  On the second night there was a wine and food event at the Old Vine House which is home to the world’s oldest wine producing vine (over 400 years old!).  They had some fabulous wines to try and the food was also highly enjoyable.

Other Highlights:

  • Our hostel was close to deserted, so it was a very peaceful and quiet time, which was nice between the hustle and bustle of Dubrovnik and Budapest.
  • While walking the streets in the afternoon we stumbled across an open air farmers market tasting which had some great cheese and meat from the nearby regions. Also there were some great bands playing on the stage and of course some wine!
