30 Countries Memoirs – Dominican Republic

Country: Dominican Republic

First Visit: 2010

Number of Times Visited: 1

Cities Visited: Punta Cana

Favorite Memory: The trip to the Dominican was with four close friends, and really the whole week we were there was all about relaxing.  We actually only left the resort once when we went into a nearby town to do some souvenir shopping, the rest of the time was spent lazing on the beach, drinking by the pool, playing Uno and ping pong, partying in the bar and just having a good time.

Other Memories:

  • It did rain a lot during this trip, but we persevered and hit the beach every day, even if it meant hiding under our towels from the rain!
  • We were in the Dominican when the massive earthquake struck Haiti on January 12, 2010.  Even though it measured 7.0 on the Richter Scale and was only about 450km away, we did not feel anything, and only found out about it the following day through word of mouth.  We ended up donating some toiletries and other needed items for the relief effort that we didn’t need to bring home with us.  Because the Dominican and Haiti are on the same island, there are lots of Haitians in the Dominican who were asking for help for their families back home.
