30 Countries Memoirs – Vatican City

Country: Vatican City

First Visit: May 2007

Number of Times Visited: 1

Cities Visited: Vatican City

Favorite Memory: Fast walking through the Vatican Museum in order to get to the Sistine Chapel before it closed, and then admiring the artwork on all of the walls and of course the roof.  No Photo’s allowed in the Sistine Chapel, but it was pretty cool to stand in there and think of all the history that has taken place in that room over the centuries.

Other Highlights:

  • Seeing all of the ornate decorations and artwork in St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Museums is very impressive, to think of the cost involved in building it is rather staggering.
  • Touring through St. Peter’s Basilica and the Catacombs below was quite interesting for a history buff like me.
  • The Vatican City is the astrix on my list because it is not considered a country by all, but according to the Traveler’s Century Club it is along with Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands and St. Maarten. Also, my rule of thumb is I have to spend a night in a country for it to count on my list, which I did not do in the Vatican City.
