30 Countries Memoirs – Spain

Country: Spain

First Visit: May 2007

Number of Times Visited: 1

Cities Visited: Barcelona, Girona

Favorite Memory: When we visited in early May of 2007 Barcelona was quite hot and we spent a lot of time on the beach enjoying said hot sun.  Being recently graduated students, we bought our own beers to take to the beach, but it was quite funny to watch this one guy going up and down the beach trying to sell people beers yelling: “Nice cold beers my friend, nice cold beers?”

Other Highlights:

  • Making friends with basically everyone in our hostel and having one big party night with about 13 of us North Americans (Calgary, Ottawa, Boston & Michigan). We eventually got kicked out of our hostel for making too much noise and went bar hopping in the beach clubs of Barcelona.  That remains one of my all-time favorite party nights and one of the few nights where I stayed out partying until the sun started to rise.
  • Stepping out of the tiny shower in our hostel to realize there was an open window right out into the laundry room, anyone out there would have had a pretty good view!
  • Trying to find our way out of Barcelona and catch a bus to the town of Girona where we were catching a flight the next day. I had said I was going to be responsible for knowing some Spanish, but I didn’t do a very good job.  Tom ended up having to save us with his Polish skills talking to a woman at the bus terminal and we made it out.
  • Running into a guy named Shane who I had some classes with in University in our hostel in Barcelona. I had actually ran into him in London as well earlier in the trip.  It always amazes me how you can travel half way around the world and still run into people you know!
